Encourage Great Eye Health for Your Child Today!

Kids grow up so fast. So fast in fact, that it might be tough to spot problems developing in their vision. Luckily, our eye care team can help detect these issues and give your child the opportunity to manage or correct them.

It all starts with an eye exam. Book your child’s next appointment today and get them the help they deserve!

Is it Important for My Child to Have an Eye Exam?

Depending on your child’s health and age, different ocular issues may develop.
Some of the most common eye conditions in children include:

When it comes to caring for your child’s eyes, you are not alone. We can help you spot issues early and can even develop a plan to manage and mitigate them.

When Should I Take My Child For an Eye Exam?

Knowing when to take your child for an eye exam can help identify potential issues early and provide your optometrist with an opportunity to correct them.

The following timeline is recommended by The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), but your optometrist may recommend more frequent eye exams based on your child’s eye health.

Your child should have a red reflex test when they are born and should have their first eye exam between 6 and 9 months.

Children should have their second eye exam between 2 and 5 years old. Conditions like myopia, amblyopia, and strabismus all have the potential to develop at this age, so it is important to make sure your child’s vision is developing as expected.

Your child’s next eye exam should happen around 6 years old or before their first day of elementary school. This exam helps to determine if their vision is developing normally and ensure they do not have any conditions that could prevent them from succeeding in school.

How Can I Tell If My Child Has a Vision Problem?

If you are not an optometrist, you may find it difficult to tell if your child has a vision problem. Unless your child has an eye exam, there is no way to be entirely sure. However, there are some behaviours you can spot that might indicate a vision problem. Some of these signs include:

  • Difficulty reading
  • Sitting close to televisions or presentations to see
  • Closing one eye or squinting
  • Frequent headaches
  • Avoiding any close-up work like reading or drawing

What Does A Children’s Eye Exam Look Like?

At Aurora 2020, our goal is to help ensure your child’s eye exam is comfortable, comprehensive, and beneficial.

We start every eye exam with a quick conversation about your child’s eye health and health history. During this discussion, please feel free to ask any questions you may have! Whether it’s about your child’s eye health or about the exam itself, we will make sure all of your questions are answered to the best of our ability.

After answering any questions you may have, we will move onto assessing your child’s visual acuity. We will use a variety of tools, including tried and true methods like Snellen eye charts or a phoropter.

This part of the exam helps determine if your child needs any corrective lenses to help make the most of their vision.
Once we determine their prescription, we will move on to assessing their eye health.

Examining your child’s eye health helps determine if there are any issues with their eyes that could threaten their vision in the future. Some common eye conditions in children include ptosis, styes, cataracts, or even blocked tear ducts.

At the end of the exam, we will prescribe any corrective lenses or medications your child may need to promote clear vision and excellent eye health. If your child is looking for glasses, they will visit our fabulous optical team to find the right frames for them!

If your child is looking for contact lenses, please let us know before your child’s eye exam so we can design the exam to match their goals.
